Stavros B. Thomadakis is Emeritus Professor of financial economics in the Department of Economics, University of Athens.
His current teaching of graduate courses includes “financial analysis”, the “microeconomics of banking” and “institutions and regulation of capital markets”.
His research interests extend to market regulation for efficiency and stability, international standards and infrastructures for the governance of markets, governance mechanisms in the private and public sector and its connection to private and public finance, history of financial crises and the birth of regulatory institutions, banking analysis and regulation.
Besides his university career, he has held public service positions in Greece and internationally.
Principal ones have been the chairmanship of the Capital Market Commission of Greece during its formative period 1996-2004 and chairmanship of the European regional Committee of IOSCO; He also served as first chairman of the Public Interest Oversight Board, a body sponsored in 2005 by IOSCO, the Basel Committee, the European Commission, the World Bank and IFAC to oversee the setting of international standards for audit, ethics and accountant education.
He is currently chairman of the Board of the University of the Aegean, member of the Securities Markets Stakeholders Group of the European Securities Markets Authority (ESMA), and member of the Hellenic Council for Corporate Governance.
